atm 78 - Digital Soundboy

ATM Issue 78 Out Now!

This issue’s Digital Soundboy cover represents the seismic shift in 2008 of the drum and bass and dubstep tectonic plates. No longer are these two genres glancing shiftily at each other from across the dancefloor, they’re now tied to the hip in what amounts to the most important cross-genre underground pollination this side of the 21st Century.

The four people that make up our cover – Shy FX, Breakage, Benny Page and B Traits – look like they could be a band or a super group and individually they’ve all got a big part to play. Shy, the founder and curator of Digital Soundboy, is leading from the front, setting the agenda and generally bossing things like a true jungle veteran – which he is, of course.

Benny Page and Breakage have both crossed the audio streams of dubstep and drum and bass to the point that the boundaries are permanently blurred. B Traits not only adds some glamour to the label but she’s been charged with mixing the labels output on the forthcoming Digital Soundboy mix CD – most definitely a case of this girl playing hard and holding her own with the boys.

All in all, this cover shows that the changes taking place are breeding a healthy state of affairs for the future and one that will break down the obsession with increasingly niche sub genres of sub genres – this is a good thing, people.

Inside, there are two stories from different parts of the world that both break new ground and tell stories that haven’t been documented before. First: The Russia World Scene Special. This tale of two cities: Moscow and St Petersburg documents the huge significance of Russia in the current world of drum and bass. Not only do we hear about some of the countries leading producers, DJs and events but ATM tells the story of travelling through Russia and how passionate the people are that the rest of the world find out about the rise of the Russian scene.

Secondly: our Bristol dubstep feature is the really significant story coming out of the city this year. Massive Attack at Southbank, done, Portishead new album, great, but Bristol dubstep is the vital development in the city’s bass and sound system culture and you can read about it first in ATM.

We also feature two artists who have produced killer LPs this year, D Bridge and Danny Byrd. Plus there’s features with hot MC Evil B, jungle legend Remarc, soul provider Utah Jazz, hip-hop raggaman Million Dan, Dutch maestro Martyn, NYC’s Empress and label features on Co-Lab and Dope Ammo. All that and there’s studio tips from Survival, Tech Support with Nookie, graffiti culture in Working Class Heroes and a leaders of the nu skool special with some of the best club promoters around.

ATM has more D&B reviews than any other magazine in the world – that’s a staggering 64 reviews every issue – and we have pages dedicated to dubstep, hip-hop, breaks and hardcore as well as albums, games and club reviews.

Finally, one of the most exciting producers in the world of D&B drops the cover CD. Vapour is a man whose music has won him fans from Doc Scott to Randall, Bailey to DJ Hype. Anyone who commands the respect of those four is someone you have to stand up and pay attention to. Check the bassline pressure on this exclusive mix for ATM from one of the scene’s hottest producers.
